A producer does what the word already says; he produces, as in: makes a product. Right, that'll be the 'Production'. How he does this may take on a mixture of appearances. Fronting the money is a way of producing. Getting the ingredients of a product recorded is also producing. Getting the best out of the performers, down from the rhythm section, up to the final take, is producing as well. Dreaming up the actual specific form of a production, 'picturing the sound', or 'creating a new sonic world' is definitely producing. Cooperating closely with composers, performers, players, arrangers and engineers, a producer creates his own 'niche' in the market, that's producing. Combining all of the above qualities is rare in one person, some do, but usually there's a team with one of them channelling the input of all the others. Production is about vision, good ideas, style and taste, conceptual thinking.... and the tenacity to actually make things happen! |
